Before He Was Famous (Starstruck #1) Playlist…

Screen Shot 2014-08-25 at 10.10.02While I was writing Before He Was Famous, songs would either pop into my head or present themselves as I sat there, either on the radio in the background, or on Spotify. And sometimes, friends would introduce me to a song and I’d just know it was a Noah and Chloe thing!

There were so many songs and artists that spoke to me along the way. Joshua Radin, Jason Reeves, Matt Nathanson and Birdy to name a few. Not all of them were available on YouTube but I’ve made a playlist of some that are, so you can enjoy them too. Here they are, with a little reason why I picked each one below. x

Girls – The 1975s

I love this band. For some reason this song reminds me of Noah’s struggle with all the adoring fans around him: “They’re just girls breaking hearts, Eyes bright, uptight, just girls. But she can’t be what you need if she’s 17, They’re just girls, They’re just girls.”

The Special Two – Missy Higgins

An Aussie fave of mine, I’m a huge Missy fan. This song makes me think of the way Chloe perceives her relationship with Noah, even though she can’t find the strength to say it: “And we will only need each other, we’ll bleed together, Our hands will not be taught to hold another’s,’Cause we’re the special two.”

Tomorrow is Gonna Be Better – Joshua Radin

I stumbled across Joshua’s music by accident and haven’t been able to stop listening to him since! I particularly love this song. Perhaps it would play after Chloe is mugged and feels like going back to Boulder, but Noah convinces her to stay: “Sometimes it’s easier to hit the road, When the world is givin’ you a heavy load, But if you stay and face it, I know… Tomorrow is gonna be better.”

Give Me One Reason – Jason Reeves & Tyrone Wells

One of my favorite songs, and one that always strikes a chord in me for some reason! I think this is the perfect example of how Noah feels when Chloe pushes him away. If she tells him to go, he’ll go and he’ll be fine, but still, he wants her BAD!! “You’re like a shadow, That I cannot hold on to, I’m not a prison, I cannot tie you down. Give me one reason to stay and I’ll stay, Give me one reason to leave and I’ll leave, I don’t need you to be me, I’ll be just fine being free.”

Would You Wait For Me – Brett Young & Tyrone Wells

A cute song, and absolutely one I imagine Noah might have written about you know who! “I don’t need a magic knight to make me feel, Like living in a fairy tale, I know this love is real, Hear me when I sing whenever I’m away, My heart is with you all the same.”

Seventeen – Stars Go Dim

I really like this band – so poppy and happy. This one sounds sort of bittersweet in a way, and matches how I think Chloe might’ve felt after what happened when she was only seventeen: “Then love came in, and time flew by, we were so free, We had it all, we gave so much, still we couldn’t see, convinced ourselves forever is more than a dream, how could we know, we were only seventeen.”

Friends, Lovers Or Nothing – John Mayer

Who doesn’t love a bit of John? And I think the title of this one speaks for itself. Sometimes things are complicated between platonic guy and girlfriends. Sometimes they’re simple. “Friends, lovers, or nothing, There can only be one, Friends, lovers, or nothing, We’ll never be the in-between, So give it up.”

What If – Colbie Caillat

This is a song I think would fit in a scene around the point Chloe comes to Vail and things get serious in the cabin. She sees it as a kind of turning point and this is when the questions really start: “What if we were made for each other, Born to become best friends and lovers, I want to stay right here, In this moment with you.”

Closer – Joshua Radin

Ah, Joshua again (total fave!) This one sums up Noah’s frustration when Chloe won’t talk to him: “Photographs and brightly colored paper, are your mask you wear in this caper that is our life, we walk right into the strife, and a tear from your eye brings me home.”

Between The Lines – Sara Bareilles

Love this lady! Her songs always speak straight to my heart, BOOM BOOM BOOM. This one in particular reminds me of how Chloe and Noah are always on the edge of something. Always between the lines. Also… Chloe has to read between the lines of Noah’s songs, all the time! “Leave unsaid unspoken, Eyes wide shut unopened, You and me, Always between the lines.”

Above The Radio – Jon McLaughlin

This one screams to me the things that might be going through Noah’s head when fame hits and he feels like he has no one to turn to: “High above the radio I sore, and no one has to know, No one has to know, I hear the wall around this city coming down, and I feel my heart beat as I’m running out of town.”

Say (All I Need) – OneRepublic

A beautiful song, and so simple! Whenever I hear this I think of Noah singing it to Chloe, or at least thinking how even though his life is so complicated, all he craves is something simple. I also feel like he could be asking Chloe if she really thinks she’ll find a love like theirs with anyone else: “Do you think you can find it? Yeah, better than you had it, Better than you had it.”

Bring Me The Night – Sam Tsui & Kina Grannis

I love these brilliant YouTube stars, and always listen to everything both of them produce. This song to me is how both Chloe and Noah feel about each other – waiting for each other, without ever really saying out loud. “Measuring days in the spaces between our goodbyes, Learning to wait through the endless parade, Of our same old see-you-next-time’s, But when I close my eyes the miles melt away, Like you’re here in my arms at the end of the day.”

All Of Me – John Legend

Good old John. There’s so much in this song that takes me to the story! Particularly this: “You’re my downfall, you’re my muse, My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues.”

Runaway Heart – The Strange Familiar

A really sweet song that to me is what’s going through Chloe’s head when she’s telling herself she should let Noah go, and let him get on with his amazing life. She’s also convincing herself that her heart will mend as long as she stays with Cooper. “Run away my heart, And don’t you ever look back, Cause you’re gonna go far, You’re gonna go far.”

Lost And Found – Katie Herzig

Part of a love that transcends time – soul mates from another life? Who knows what Chloe and Noah are. This gorgeous song makes me think about everything! “If you were gone in another life, I don’t believe I would just survive, I could feel you next to me, An escape from the world I’m in, Oh, I’m afraid of the world I’m in.”

Between Here & Now – Stars Go Dim

This one just reminds me of the angst Noah feels about what he and Chloe did when her dad died. Did they lose their innocence? Did they really screw things up irrevocably? “We lost our innocence, we ask ourselves there must be more than this, to this life, to this world, every moment between here and now.”

Photographs And Memories – Jason Reeves

Chloe’s a photographer and obviously that’s a theme in her world and in this book. I love how this song could be written and sung by Noah about all the things he remembers: “And I , I’ll be as patient as a boy, In love could ever be, And I, I feel like I wasn’t real, Until you were a part of me.”

Settle Down – The 1975s

I love these guys, which is why I put them at the start and the end of this playlist! This one kind of makes me think of Noah’s struggle with Courtney. He knows he’s attracted to her but it’s nothing compared to the love he has for Chloe. He wants to be a good guy, but it’s hard! “For crying out loud, settle down!, You know I can’t be found with you, We get back to my house, Your hands, my mouth, Now I just stop myself around you.”

Have you got any ideas for songs I should add to this playlist? If so I’d love to know! xx
