“The haters gonna hate, hate, hate. / Baby I’m just gonna shake, shake, shake / Shake it off.”
YES, thank you Taylor Swift, for addressing what a lot of us have to deal with every day. The haters. The trolls.
I’ve been having this conversation more and more lately, mostly with other writers because of course, I’m a writer, but every day it seems there’s a new story about someone who’s seriously miserable about some hater letting loose at them. You try not to let it get to you but in the end, no matter what anybody says, it’s always at the back of your mind. What did I do wrong? Why? Why?
The worst thing of all is that often this hate is shrouded in anonymity on the internet. We read it on our blogs, on forums, on our Amazon pages – reams of nastiness from people who, it would seem, have nothing better to do with their sad lives than bring other people down.
But the haters gonna hate, and the players gonna play. “Shake It Off,” says Taylor, and man, that is some pretty good advice. No one can get to you unless you let them, right?
Who’s shaking with me right now? (Apart from you, Taylor).
